Volleyball Tournament
was a Smash
By TODD URBAN
The North Coast Volleyball Invitational II, held Labor Day weekend was a smashing success for Cleveland. Four teen teams from the U.S. and Canada participated in the long weekend of volleyball and socializing.
The tournament was divided into A and B divisions. The first place trophy in the A division went to the team from Ithaca, New York. Orient Express out of Washing ton, D.C., was second, and the Cleveland Fremen (named after the sand warriors in "Dune") were third. In the B division, Columbus, Ohio, was first, Baltimore second, and Philadelphia third.
The tournament opened with registration and a full moon party at Keys Friday night. Over the Rainbow also hosted a welcome party.
Saturday's matches lasted until 7 p.m. Then the players were hosted at a banquet at Chaps, including a buffet dinner and show for over 200 people. Besides Jeff Frayer, who emceed as Madame, the show featured the talents of Melissa Ross, Katrice Phillips, Bobby Josephs, "Princess from Washington, and "Louise" from Ithacă.

As tournament participants, if this were not enough, the their hosts, and V.B. groupies were all treated to a farewell prty at Keys and an After Cruise party at Chaps. On Monday the Club Body Center sponsored a Texas Barbecue for their members and all tournament participants.
All in all, the entire gay community of Cleveland pulled together to sponsor an event that will be remembered for a long time. The Greater Cleveland Volleyball Association's goal was to include as many people as possible and to promote the sport of competitive volleyball. These goals were met this year. The future goals of the GCVA include the expansion of the local community's participation. So, reserve next Labor Day now and get involved. The tournaments are a great new way to make friends, promote your community, and participate in a very rewarding experience. Thank you, CLEVELAND!

HUGS Organizes=
by James Amerson
In April of this year, another group was formed for Gays and Lesbians in the Cleveland area. The group was not founded on the ideals of any particular religion, political stance or even as a social consciousness raising entity. It is a group that meets regularly so its members can be together and enjoy one another. A rather simplistic way of stating it, but H.UG.S. (Hope, Understanding, Giving, and Support) is basically just that.

The mixed lesbian and gay group gathers on alternate Tuesday and Thursday evenings every other week. There is no particular goal yet) but each meeting is carefully planned. Discussion topics might include "What Does It Mean To Be Gay, or "Learning About Each Others Gay Experiences. Holiday social functions are also planned.

The discussion topic is chosen by an inner core of four people (2 men, 2 women). The core varies from meeting to meeting with no two people serving as leaders more than two consecutive times. It sounds confusing but it works beautifully. Everyone gets a turn at being group facilitator.
Heretofore, the membership has been small--about 20 to 25. Invited guests, however, have doubled. It seems once people come for a visit-they stay.
For those looking for a stimulating evening of discussion about being Gay or Lesbian--H.V.G.S. is for you. Once again, meetings are held on alternating Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 8:00 in the Civic Educational Wing on Mayfield Road in Cleveland Heights. The next meeting is Thursday, November 7. Please bring $1.00 for rental of the space. Refreshments are provided and parking is free.
